How to draw a perpendicular to a given line from a given point in it

Question :
Line AB is 8 cm long.  Point O is on line AB at a distance of 5 cm from A.  Draw a perpendicular to the line AB from point O.

Step by step construction given below


Draw the line AB 8 cm long.


Mark point O on line AB at a distance of 5 cm from A.


Point O is a centre and any convenient radius, draw an arc intersecting line AB.


Marking intersecting points M and N.




Point M and N as the centre and radius slightly larger than half of MN, draw two arcs on one side of the line AB, intersecting each other in point P.

Join point P and point O.

Line PO is the required perpendicular to the line AB at point O
